I have
traded Janes on and off for a long time, lets face it since 1991 its been quite
a bit off except for some Relapse in 1997. Because I was a college kid back
when Janes was tromping around the clubs through Lollapalooza, I collected many
of these tapes when they were happening, so you may see some low gens..
Now I
also collect a ton of bands, and I admit, Janes trading and taping was by far
the laziest of any band I ever saw. Many of them were done with poor eqipment
for its day (the old Aiwa with an external mic). Many were done by guys under a
heavy influence of 'shrooms, dope, whatever so like I say the audio quality is
just not that great. There are some exceptions, as always, and you can tell
from my list what they are. The difference I think that separates my list from
others you will see is yes im an older guy and these tapes were collected when
they happened, I didnt "get into" janes in 1997 or discover them five
years after they broke up. I got into them in 88 and picked up there tapes as
they were happening, so even the crappy ones dont have much if any hiss, there
just low gen average recordings.
So with
another lineup of Janes embarking on the road again for Lollapalooza 2003, and
a new record out, I am looking for some good quality ones from this year..I
will trade on CDr or online (ftp, bittorent). I cant see any reason to trade
anymore on cassette. If you want something thats on cassette I have no problem
burning it to CD...I use a denon 3 head deck in through my Egosys WT2496
digital soundcard to convert stuff to CDR. I also try to avoid
"cooking" the tapes and many times go in flat...To many people fancy
themselves as master enhancers of tapes, problem is many of these guys just
ruin them. So I try to keep that to a minmum if I do it at all. I do not use
Noise reduction software as I have still not found one that works without
creating artificial noizes or kill the high end.
So here
is my list, shows denoted with a * are ones I have already converted to CDR for
myself

other
notes:
1) I
traded a bit back in 97, so some may remember me, and one problem i had in 1997
was my list had a few more shows, but it came to my attention then that some of
them went missing probably due to moving about 4 times in 8 years..So this time
around before I compiled the list , I actually went through and cross checked
all the tapes in my boxes with whats on the list, so hopefully I will not run
into that problem this time.
2) I
can trade online in SHN format, and give you server access.
3) I am a growing fan of bittorent. It does
have some limitations, but at least when you want to blast something out, it
can be done quickly, efficiently and in a lossless format in less time than
kids spend looking for mp3. Of course the downside is I am a dumbshit so I cant
do my own tracker, and the ones that are out there seem to constantly crash
being victims of there own success. As we all know a bittorrent without a
tracker is usless. But If anyone is into setting up a Janes bittorent tracker,
Im cool with upping some stuff, bearing in mind I might need a little know how
on how to get them running (I have used BT easy but whenever I try to up it to
various trackers nothing works)
4) For
the DAT heads and people who have come to trading the last couple years, heads
up, Janes traders in the old days didnt keep track of decks, mics and whatnot
to well..So dont ask what the rig was for the show in 1989 at some random
venue, if I knew it I would put it there..Many of the 88-90 shows were sony analog
d3 at best. And I dont just lie or make up gens to draw people to my list, some
that don't have a generation are maybe not more than 2nd , and have virtually
no hiss at all, but I am not just going to guess and lie about it.
5) My
ratings are a bit harsh, but again thats relative to other bands I collect, as
stated above, some reason Janes tapers were just quite a bit crappier than say
Pixies, Cure or U2 at the time..so may see some low grades for shows, but its a
relative things. It was hard to ever get a 9 janes tapes in the late 80s as
most the PA's they played on where to crappy to be capable of generating that
Long
live the original Janes Tapers
Mark
Wasserman, Sal Espinoza, Eric Denning, Dave Mertz (who I think I still owe a
tape) and a ton of guys who I mainly knew as "dude".
